When a car helps in Istanbul

In the historic centre, traffic and parking make public transport the easier choice. A car pays off once you leave the centre.

  • Day trip

    The Black Sea coast

Şile, at the northernmost point of Istanbul province, lies on the Black Sea — a typical drive out of the city.

  • Road trip

    Onward into Anatolia

Istanbul is a common start for longer drives. Plan the route, motorway tolls and rest stops before you set off.

  • Arrival

    Luggage and family trips

With luggage or children, a car can be simpler than changing transport between the airport and your accommodation.

Two airports on two continents

Choose the starting point on the side of the city where your trip begins.

  • Istanbul Airport (IST)

In Arnavutköy on the European side, north of the city centre.

  • Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)

In Pendik on the Asian side, about 32 km south-east of the centre.

  • An address in the city

A pick-up in the city would be a third, separate place. Each future offer will name its exact pick-up point.

Driving in Istanbul

  • Bosphorus

    Crossings and tolls

Road bridges and a road tunnel link the European and Asian sides. Tolls on the large bridges and motorways are collected electronically through HGS.

  • Traffic

    Allow extra time

Traffic is heavy at rush hour. Leave a margin for drives to and from the airports.

  • Parking

    Ask before you arrive

Central streets are busy. Check parking with your accommodation before you arrive by car.

Questions about car rental in Istanbul

Which Istanbul airport suits a road trip better?

It depends on where you are going. Istanbul Airport is on the European side, north of the centre; Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side, south-east of the centre. Choose the one on the side where your route begins.

Can I pick up a car at Istanbul Airport through GetnDrive?

Not yet. No rental partners in Turkey are connected, so there are no offers or pick-up places for Istanbul on GetnDrive.

How are Bosphorus bridge tolls paid in a rental car?

Tolls on the large bridges and motorways are collected electronically through HGS. Ask the rental company whether the car has a tag and how the tolls are charged.

Do I need a car in central Istanbul?

Often not: traffic and parking make public transport easier in the centre. A car is more useful for trips out of the city.

Which side of Istanbul is Sabiha Gökçen on?

The Asian side, in the Pendik district, about 32 km south-east of the centre.

Is a car useful for a day trip to the Black Sea?

Yes. Şile, at the northernmost point of Istanbul province, is on the Black Sea coast and is easier to combine with other stops by car.
