Car rental in Tbilisi: what to know

Tbilisi is Georgia’s capital and a natural starting point for road trips across the east of the country.

  • In the city

    Often no car needed

Many visitors get around central Tbilisi on foot, by metro or by taxi.

  • Out of the city

A car for the days out

Most useful for the Georgian Military Road, Kakheti or the road west to Borjomi and Kutaisi.

  • In the offer

    Place, terms and price

When a local company publishes a car, its offer shows the pick-up place, rental conditions and price.

  • Payment

    You pay the company

The rental is paid to the company, not to GetnDrive.

    Mtskheta

Georgia’s ancient capital is about 20 km from Tbilisi, where the Aragvi meets the Mtkvari. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the Jvari Monastery on the hill above the confluence are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Historical Monuments of Mtskheta — an easy first trip.

Georgian Military Road: Ananuri, Gudauri, Kazbegi

The road north passes the Ananuri fortress by the Zhinvali Reservoir, climbs to the resort of Gudauri, crosses the Jvari Pass and reaches Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) below Mount Kazbek. In winter the Gudauri–Kobi section over the pass is sometimes closed because of avalanche danger.

  3. Illustration of Sighnaghi in summer: tiled roofs, light houses and parts of the old town wall on a green hill above the wide Alazani Valley

    Kakheti: Sighnaghi and Telavi

East of Tbilisi lies Georgia’s main wine-growing region: the hill town of Sighnaghi, the regional centre Telavi, and the vineyards and wineries around them.

West and south-west: Uplistsikhe, Borjomi, Bakuriani

West of Tbilisi, the rock-cut town of Uplistsikhe stands near Gori. Further on, in Samtskhe-Javakheti, are the spa town of Borjomi with the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park and the mountain resort of Bakuriani above it.

  5. Illustration of Kutaisi in summer: houses with red roofs along a wide turquoise river, a footbridge and a domed church on a green hill

Further west lies Kutaisi with an international airport, and beyond it the Black Sea coast around Batumi.

Choosing where to pick up the car

Where you pick up the car depends on the rental company: check the pick-up place in the specific offer’s terms. Before you choose, think about where your trip really begins.

  • About 17 km from the centre

    Straight from the airport

Saves a transfer if your trip starts from the flight — only if the rental company offers airport pick-up; check it in the specific offer’s terms.

  • Take it on the day you leave

A few days in the city first

Explore Tbilisi on foot and pick the car up when you leave — no parking to find meanwhile.

  • If the company offers it

    Delivery and one-way rentals

Delivery to your hotel, or a return in Kutaisi or Batumi, is possible only if the rental company offers it. Check with the rental company.

Driving in and around Tbilisi

  • Right-hand traffic

    Traffic and rules

Do not drink and drive. Speed limits, the alcohol limit and the documents you need are set by Georgian law; check the current official rules before your trip.

  • Paid street parking

    Parking in the city

Central Tbilisi has paid municipal street parking. Follow the signs and markings where you stop, and ask the rental company how fines are handled.

  • Gudauri, Kazbegi, Bakuriani

    Mountain roads

In winter, tyre requirements apply on some mountain roads, and closures or restrictions may be introduced; check the current road status before you set off.

Car rental in Tbilisi: questions

How do I find a rental car in Tbilisi on GetnDrive?

Choose your pick-up and return dates in the search; results are matched by dates. A published offer shows its pick-up place, conditions and price; check the handover time with the rental company.

What if the search finds nothing for my dates?

It means no local rental company has a published offer for these dates. Try other dates or another destination in Georgia.

How far ahead and for how long can I search?

You can choose a pick-up date up to a year ahead and a rental of up to 90 days. A rental company may set its own minimum rental period; check it in the specific offer’s terms.

Who provides the car, and whom do I pay?

A local rental company provides the car and sets its price, deposit and conditions; check them in the specific offer’s terms. You pay the rental directly to that company; GetnDrive does not take the rental payment or the deposit.

Can I pick up the car at Tbilisi airport?

Only if the rental company offers pick-up at the airport. GetnDrive does not invent pick-up points: check with the rental company where the car is handed over. The airport is about 17 km south-east of the city centre.

Is delivery or a one-way rental possible?

Only if the rental company offers it — delivery to your hotel, or a return in another city such as Kutaisi or Batumi. Check with the rental company.

Is insurance included?

Insurance cover is set by each rental company. Check what it includes in the specific offer’s terms.

Which documents do I need, and is my foreign licence valid?

The rental company tells you which documents it requires. Whether your foreign licence is valid in Georgia depends on where it was issued and how long you stay; check the current official rules before you travel.

Do I need a car in Tbilisi itself?

Not always. Many visitors explore central Tbilisi on foot, by metro or by taxi. A car is most useful for trips out of the city, such as Mtskheta, Kakheti or the Georgian Military Road.

Is the road to Gudauri and Kazbegi open all year?

Not always. The Gudauri–Kobi section over the Jvari Pass is sometimes closed or restricted in winter because of avalanche danger. Check the road status on the day you travel.

Does a longer rental cost less per day?

That depends on the rental company. Check the price for the length of your trip in the specific offer’s terms.
