Boats and yachts in Phuket

Thailand’s largest island, on the Andaman Sea. Decide first what kind of day on the water you want — along the coast, out to nearby islands or a longer sea route — then choose a boat and agree the exact pier with the operator.

Right now GetnDrive boat offers in Phuket are not connected yet. This page has no vessel catalog, prices, availability or booking: it is a guide to planning a trip on the water.

Coast and routes

Along the coast, to the islands or further out

Phuket is a large island with beaches on every side and smaller islands off its coast. Before you compare boats, decide which of three kinds of trip you have in mind.

Along the coast

A shorter outing within sight of the shore: bays, beaches and a swim stop, with little time spent in transit.

To nearby islands

Day trips to the smaller islands off Phuket: crossings in open water, then time at one or more stops.

A longer sea route

Some trips continue into neighbouring provinces, for example to the Phi Phi islands in Krabi province. Expect more time at sea and a plan that depends most on the weather.

Where you stay, where you go and where you board are three different places

  • Where you stayYour hotel’s beach or district says little about the trip: the boat may leave from the other side of the island.
  • Where you want to goCoast, nearby islands or a longer route: the direction decides the boat, the time at sea and the starting point.
  • Where you boardChalong Bay, with a long jetty busy with day trips to nearby islands, is one known departure area, but operators work from different piers and marinas. The operator confirms the exact pier, route and stops.

Choose a boat

Motor yacht, sailing catamaran, speedboat or longtail boat

A guide for choosing, not a list of GetnDrive boats: the pictures are illustrations. Which boats operate in Phuket, and on what terms, depends on the operator.

Illustration: a large white motor yacht on calm turquoise water near a wooded shore

Motor yacht

A private day with shade, seating and room to move about on board, at an unhurried pace.

Choose it if:

  • your group wants comfort more than speed
  • you would like to plan swim stops with the captain
  • you prefer a private trip to a shared one

Ask the operator: how many guests it takes, who is in the crew, and whether fuel, drinks and park tickets are included.

Sailing catamaran

Two hulls, a wide deck and a steadier, quieter day for a group that wants to spend it together.

Choose it if:

  • you like a slower, relaxed day
  • your group wants deck space to sit and swim from
  • you are flexible: sailing depends on the wind

Ask the operator: whether the boat will sail or motor, how many guests it takes and how much shade there is on deck.

Illustration: a speedboat with a blue canopy moving fast past tall limestone cliffs

Speedboat

A fast, open boat that covers distance quickly, so more of the day is left for the islands.

Choose it if:

  • you want to reach islands further out
  • you would like several stops in one day
  • everyone is fine with a faster, bumpier ride

Ask the operator: the route and stops, a seat and a life jacket for everyone, and what happens if the sea is rough.

Thai longtail boat

A traditional wooden boat with its engine on a long shaft at the stern: open, simple and close to the water.

Choose it if:

  • you are planning a short hop between nearby beaches or islands
  • you want a simple, local way to be on the water
  • you do not need a cabin or much room on board

Ask the operator: whether there is a canopy, a life jacket for everyone, and how far from the shore the trip goes.

Boarding

Know the pier and the time before the day

The picture shows a typical floating pontoon, not a particular pier in Phuket. For your own trip, get in writing:

Illustration: passengers walking up a gangway from a floating pontoon onto a passenger boat
  • The pier or marina — its exact name and where on it the boat waits.
  • The address — a street address or map pin, and how to get there from your hotel.
  • Arrival time — how early to come and who meets you.
  • How you board — a pontoon, a gangway, steps or from a beach, and help for children or anyone with limited mobility.
  • Return point — whether the boat brings you back to the same place.

Weather and sea

The sea decides the route on the day

Wind and waves affect whether a boat goes out at all, which route it takes and which stops are possible.

The season

From about mid-May to mid-October the southwest monsoon brings more rain to Thailand’s west coast. Thai weather warnings for the Andaman Sea at times advise small boats to stay ashore.

The day itself

Conditions can change within a day. The captain may shorten the route, skip a stop or postpone the trip, and smaller, faster boats feel the waves most.

National parks

Some marine national parks in the Andaman Sea close for part of the monsoon season, and visits need park tickets, so a planned stop depends on the date.

Ask before you pay

Every company sets its own terms. Keep the answers in writing.

  1. ReschedulingWho decides that the sea is too rough, and can the trip move to another day?
  2. RefundIf the trip is cancelled or cut short, how much is refunded, and when?
  3. Life jacketsIs there one for every passenger, including child sizes, and where are they kept?
  4. CrewIs there a captain only or crew as well, and which languages do they speak?
  5. FuelIs fuel included for the whole route, or charged separately?
  6. Extra feesAre park tickets, island fees, transfers, food and drinks in the price or paid on the day?

The essentials

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a boat in Phuket through GetnDrive now?

No. GetnDrive boat offers in Phuket are not connected yet, so there is no vessel catalog, price list, calendar or booking on this page.

Which boat should I choose?

For comfort and a private day, a motor yacht. For a relaxed group day with deck space, a sailing catamaran. To reach islands further out quickly, a speedboat. For a short, simple hop near the shore, a longtail boat. Then check with the operator what the trip actually includes.

Where do boat trips in Phuket start?

From piers and marinas around the island. Chalong Bay is one known departure area for day trips to nearby islands, but each operator uses its own pier. Ask for the exact name, address, arrival time and return point before you pay.

Can a trip include islands, and which ones?

Smaller islands lie off Phuket’s coast, and longer routes go further, for example to the Phi Phi islands in neighbouring Krabi province. Which stops are possible depends on the operator, the boat, the sea that day and national park rules.

Does the weather matter?

Yes. From about mid-May to mid-October the monsoon brings more rain and rougher sea to the west coast, and conditions can change during any day. Ask who decides whether the trip goes ahead and how rescheduling or a refund works.

Are boat trips suitable for children?

Often, but rules differ. Ask from what age children are welcome, whether there are child-size life jackets, how they board, and whether shade and a calmer boat are possible.

What is usually included in the price?

It varies: crew, fuel, food and drinks, snorkelling gear, park tickets, other fees and a transfer may or may not be included. Ask for a written list of what is included and what is paid separately.

Can I drive a boat myself?

If you want to drive a boat yourself, ask the operator about its conditions first and check the applicable local requirements, including whether a licence is needed.

How do I stay in touch with the operator?

Before you pay, ask for a phone number or messenger contact that works on the day of the trip, and the name of the person who meets you. Keep the confirmation of the pier, time and price in writing.

How can a boat operator join GetnDrive?

Open the partner application, select “Yachts” or “Boats” and tell us about your company, boats and where your trips start. Listing offers on GetnDrive requires a separate review.
